Edwin Willits (1830-1896), an 1855 graduate of the University of Michigan, took office as the fourth president of M.A.C on July 1, 1885 and served until 1889. In the mold of the college's first president, Joseph Williams, Willits was a "renaissance man." He was 54, and most recently had been president of the State Normal School (now Eastern Michigan University).
