Prior to 1964, there were many discussions and movements to create an osteopathic medical education college in Michigan. The Michigan Osteopathic College Foundation was incorporated in 1961 with the “object and purpose of this Foundation to establish a school of osteopathic medicine and surgery in the state of Michigan and to otherwise assist in financing schools, colleges and advanced institutions devoted to teaching the osteopathic concept of the healing arts in order to educate and provide osteopathic physicians and surgeons and to provide education in the ancillary disciplines for the benefit of the public and to provide for the general health and care of the sick and indigent”. Around this period, discussion arose on the creation of the Michigan University of Osteopathy in the Lansing area. In 1964, the State of Michigan authorized a state charter for establishing a private Michigan College of Osteopathic Medicine (MCOM) in Pontiac, MI making it the 6th osteopathic college in the nation and the first in 53 years. In 1969, the first students were admitted. A petition was sent to the state legislature to make MCOM a state assisted school. This was passed and MSU accepted the responsibility to establish the college. In 1970, the college became a component of MSU and became the first publicly funded college of osteopathic medicine. In 1971, the school transferred to East Lansing as Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM). Since it began operations in 1970, the College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM) has been responsible to the Provost. The College is jointly responsible for numerous science and medical related departments with other colleges.
