President Abbot was awarded an LL.D degree by the University of Michigan in June, 1871. It was only the seventh honorary doctor's degree the U of M had awarded. University of Michigan President James B. Angell delivered the commencement address at M.A.C in November of 1871. He said, "You have enjoyed facilities for the study of scientific agriculture, superior to those offered by any similar institution in the land, for I can say that the Michigan State Agricultural College stands unrivaled. This lays upon you a heavy responsibility."
In the November 16, 1871 Detroit Free Press, President Angell was quoted, "The Agricultural College of Michigan is recognized as the best of its kind in the U.S."
