Prior ot the fall of 1981, all women's sports on campus were a part of the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW). The MSU Athletic Council approved the department's decision to join the National Collegiate Athletic Association making MSU the second Big Ten school to make the move, after Northwestern.
