The Auditorium was completed in 1939 and cost $1,025,000. According to the February 6, 1940 edition of the Michigan State News, no formal dedication was held. The first public event was a lecture by Pulitzer Prize winning journalist H. R. Knickerbocker on February 20, 1940. In March 1940, U.S. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt made an address in the new building.
Jenison Gymnasium and Fieldhouse was also completed in 1939 at a cost of $1,100,000. The first game in the new building took place on January 6, 1940 where MSC defeated Tennessee, 29-20.
