Large renovations to the Union Building were set in place in 1936. A large annex was added to provide 12 additional classrooms, a home for the Art Department, headquarters for the Wolverine student yearbook, as well as the headquarters for the State News.
The football stadium also underwent renovations in 1936. The stadium floor was lowered and the running track was removed to provide 12 more rows of permanent seats. These changes raised the seating capacity of the stadium from 14,000 to 23,000 people. A new running track (now the Ralph H. Young Track and Field) was created just west of the stadium to compensate for the removal of the track in the stadium.
