The date on the college seal was changed from 1857 to 1855. 1855 was the year that marked the schools founding date, while 1857 was the year in which the school was opened and dedicated.

As a result of this change, Michigan State fairly claims the distinction of being the oldest agricultural college in the nation as well as the pioneer land-grant institution.
