Title: Department of Art is established
Description:

The Department of Art grew from courses in drawing offered at Michigan Agricultural College starting in 1861 as an aid to students in engineering and laboratory coursework. By 1901, the department had been placed within the Engineering Department with the name of "Drawing and Design". The growth of enrollment in freehand drawing and painting courses after World War I led to the separation of the art courses from the more practical engineering drawing. In 1931, the art curriculum was separated from the Engineering Department and placed under the new division of Liberal Arts.
