Theophilius C. Abbot (1826-1892), was named the third president of the college and served from 1862-1884. Abbot was an 1845 graduate of Colby University in Waterville, Maine, and was selected as the third president of the college in December of 1862. His election was a major step in the survival of the college, although unknown at the time. Abbot has taught at Bangor Theological Seminary in Maine; Colby University; Berrien Springs, Michigan schools; and the Union School in Ann Arbor before his appointment in 1858 as a professor of English at M.A.C.
