The U.S. War Department established a Student Army Training Corps (SATC) unit at M.A.C. in the fall of 1918. According to Keith Widder in "Michigan Agricultural College: the Evolution of a Land-Grant Philosophy 1855-1925, "Eight temporary barracks that could house 1,400 men and two mess halls were built east of the Horticultural Laboratory to accommodate the 500 men of "Class B" enrolled in the auto mechanics course. Another 500 men of "Class A," who met the requirements to be regular college students, arrived in October to study subjects useful in the military such as mathematics, chemistry, war history, drawing, and French. They lived in the men's dormitories and on the top floors of Agriculture Hall and the Olds Hall of Engineering."
