Clarence L. "Biggie" Munn (1908-1975) served as both football coach and athletic director at M.S.U. He graduated from the University of Minnesota (1932) where he was voted All-American and Most Valuable Player in the Big Ten during his senior year. Munn came to M.S.U. in 1947 as head football coach. He made M.S.U.'s team a national football power, winning the National Championship and "Coach of the Year" award in 1952, and the Rose Bowl in 1954. Munn became the athletic director at M.S.U. in 1954 and actively developed an intramural athletic program during his tenure of office. He was forced to retire in 1971 due to a stroke. M.S.U.'s Munn Arena is named in his honor (1974).
