Dr. Lou Anna K. Simon was elected president on June 18, 2004. She retained her position as provost and was president-designate until M. Peter McPherson retired on December 31, 2004. She then became the first woman president at MSU on January 1, 2005 and one of only nine woman holding said position among the membership of the Association of American Universities (made of the 62 leading research institutions in the US).
