The Board of Trustees, Michigan State University's governing body, issued the following statement: "Due to safety concerns associated with hoverboards and the potential impact to the safety of our community, Michigan State University has decided to prohibit the use of these devices on campus. Effective March 18, 2016, hoverboards, also known as self-balancing scooters and hands-free Segways, will not be permitted on campus or in any building owned by Michigan State University. This action is being taken as part of the university’s efforts to maintain a safe campus through a comprehensive fire prevention program. "
