After the State Board of Education demanded the resignation of M.A.C.'s first president Joseph Williams, Lewis R. Fiske became the second president of the college. He was a graduate from the University of Michigan in 1850, and later went on to obtain his D.D. from Albion College and his LDD from the University of Michigan.
