The 12th annual Spartan Invitational men's golf tournament takes place at Forest Akers Golf Course in East Lansing, Michigan. Michigan State's Green team, led by head coach Bruce Fossum and featuring Mark Egly, Mark Brooks, Gary Domagalski, Rick Grover, Joe Marx, and Doug Lemanski, places 9th in the tournament.

The Spartan Invitational women's track and field meet takes place at Ralph Young Field in East Lansing, Michigan. The MSU team, led by head coach Cheryl Bridges, captures 1st place in the meet. Spartans Sue Latter and Sue Sebastian are double winners and Cynthia Wadsworth takes 1st place in the three-mile run.
