A photograph of Dr. John Richard Ackermann. He was born in Cape Town, South Africa on December 23, 1935. He completed his B.A. (1953) Diocesan College, MB, ChB (1960) University of Cape Town, FRCS (1966) Royal College of Surgeons, and MD (1967) University of Capetown. He joined the faculty at the College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University in 1971 as a professor of surgery and left in 1974. Prior to that he was employed at University of Cape Town, Groote Schur Hospital, St. Mary's Hospital (UK), and Vanderbilt University Hospital. While at MSU, Dr. Ackermann established a transplant program.

He was one of 5 kidney transplant surgeons in Michigan who co-created Gift of Life Michigan (then called the Transplantation Society of Michigan) in 1971. The others were Dr. Jeremiah Turcotte, Dr. J.C.Rosenberg, Dr. Stanley Dienst and Dr. Edward Coppola.
