Charles Fay Wheeler
In the 147th regiment of Infantry, New York Volunteers
C.F. Wheeler entered Mexico Academy, Mexico, Oswego county, N.Y. in 1857. In August of 1861, he enlisted as a private in Co. B, 7th Regiment, New York State Volunteer Cavalry. In April 1862, this regiment was mustered out of the United States service and in July, 1862, he re-enlisted in Co. F, 147th Regiment New York Volunteer Infantry. In November of '62, he was sent to Catholic College Hospital in Georgetown, Washington D.C., with typhoid fever, and to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in December, where a relapse with pneumonia accompaniment confined him in the United States General Hospital in that city until April, 1863, when he was discharged from the service.
His botanical studies began July 1863, and the study of medicine in 1864. He took the regular junior course in Medical department at U.of M., Ann Arbor, Michigan from 1866-67. He was appointed instructor in botany at M.A.C. in the fall of 1889, and graduated with the class of 1891.
