Carolyn Stieber earned a B.S. degree from the University of Chicago, worked as a civilian for the US Navy for many years, and then graduated with a Master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh with a political science degree. In 1957, Ms. Stieber joined the Political Science department at MSU and began teaching American politics, then state and urban politics, and eventually Michigan politics. She attended the Michigan Constitutional Convention in the 1960s, interviewing many of the major players at this convention. In 1974 Ms. Stieber was appointed as the ombudsman for MSU students (graduate and undergraduate) and was instrumental in changing the Academic Freedom report so if a student won a grievance or an appeal, some named individual would need to see that justice is done. Ms. Stieber served as president of College and University Ombudsmen, was on the board of directors of SPIDR (Society of Professionals in Dispute Resolution), and presently serves on the Community Relations Coalition for the City of East Lansing (consisting of MSU representatives; East Lansing business people, city officials, city police; MSU students). Ms. Stieber retired from MSU in 1991.
