Scott Vaughn earned a BA in secondary education with an emphasis on social studies and an MEd in the history of education from MSU prior to 1966. For two years he taught in the public schools of Hazelwood, Missouri, and then returned to MSU in 1968 to work on a PhD in the philosophy of education. Then in 1970, Vaughn began work as Assistant Director of the Honors College, a position he characterized as a glorified academic advisor.
