Reverend Theodore Hesburgh served as president of Notre Dame for over 35 years, retiring in 2000.
Hesburgh worked with John Hannah on the Civil Rights Commission beginning in 1958. Their mandate was to expand the role of human rights for all United States citizens to include voting, education, housing, employment, and the administration of justice.
