Colleen McNamara was involved in left-wing politics and became a member of the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) while a student at MSU. After her graduation with a degree in sociology and social science, Ms. McNamara served for four years as the executive director for the Lansing Housing Assistance Foundation, then as director of the Michigan Waste Industries Association, and finally as director of the cable industry. In 1993, she was elected to the MSU Board of Trustees. During her tenure, the Board was involved in the tuition guarantee, urban affairs survey, and keeping the MSU campus beautiful.
